Next level stuff.

At first I figured it was going to be a syrupy, New Age kind of thing but was pleasantly surprised. This double disc set is filled with various chant styles from around the world. There is some of the cheesy stuff but for the most part it doesn’t sink to that level.
Chant is a powerful thing and modern music is not free from this idea. If you’ve wondered about the strange appeal of a lot of dub techno music, Stephen Hitchell (aka Intrusion, half of Echospace, etc.), makes reference to Rod Modell’s experience with the Hari Krishnas and the mantra-like essence of the music he makes. Hitchell notes that a “hypnotic state is induced” and that they “bring some of that philosophy through the music.” (Source)
I’ve noticed this at the place of worship I attend and the similarity of the appeal with certain kinds of “secular” music. Those heightened moments during a service often come during the musical portion where the music takes on a “mantra like” vibe, stripped down to a basic rhythm, a simple phrase repeated, even chanted, over and over again, inducing a certain state where the mind is receptive to things of a “spiritual” nature.
If anyone has been into the trance/techno (or even Grateful Dead) scene, you know exactly what I mean. Ecstasy, release, the highs that come while engaged in the moment, carried on by the power of the music.
If you like this kind of thing, check out Music for the Native Americans by Robbie Robertson, Night Song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (a track of his is featured on this disc), the Baraka soundtracks or recitations from the Qur’an.
“Limited to just 500 copies, this 12 disc box is subtitled ‘The Definitive Ambient Collection’, and justly so, 122 tracks from such artists as Fluid, Hawkwind, Crystal Moon, Josh Abrahams, Carl Cox, The Orb, Loop Guru, Astralasia, Future Sound Of London, David Toop, Children Of Dub and manyothers.
Contains the Dressed To Kill four CD compilations ‘Future Sound Of Infinity’ and both volumes of ‘Amberdelic Space’. Costs half the price of what you’d pay for these three collections separately! Comes in a full color slipcasebox. 1998 Dressed To Kill.”
All the trippy, ambient-y, spacey, dubby goodness you can imagine on 12 CDs. Too much? Or just a teaser?
Will keep your head busy for days.
Thanks to the original uploader.

I had posted a 12″ of Relapxych and Atheus a few posts back and someone commented on posting more Relapxych, especially since his stuff his hard to find. I don’t have anymore of his stuff and it appears that a lot of what is floating around is in “edit” form.
So I stumbled over to discogs and looked up his releases (and his various monikers) and searched and searched for his stuff to download. Nada. I’m sure with a little more effort it would show up sooner or later but I didn’t feel like waiting…
So I checked out his ghostsounds website and noticed the quality of the releases, especially the packaging. He describes his sound as “the ghost sounds of everyday life.” I like that and decided to shoot him an email. He quickly responded. I quickly placed an order.
With things easily obtained for free on time it sometimes takes a conscious and intentional effort to support an artist. But when you can go directly to the artist and get a response, it makes it that much easier. Granted, not all artists will be as accessible but I believe in supporting artists with my hard earned cash.
It’s really a different world today that you can email an artist directly and order right from him. I’m not a groupie kind of guy but this an artist whose ideas and sounds I’d like to follow so any way I can support him is no problem.
Just giving props to the artist and reminding others to consciously choose to support those artists whose music speaks to, and for, you.
The two releases on the way:
Ripples On The Surface Of Time And Space/Last Industrial Estates Vol. 1
Besides, vinyl and CDs sound better than mp3 files and there is something about the physicality of a medium that gives it that certain something that an mp3 just lacks. Guess I’m old school tactile.
I’ll post feedback when it arrives.
Another stellar dub/techno/minimal release, featuring Atheus and Relapxych (in all variations thereof), one of my favorite artists as of late.
It starts out with a solid dub tech track but slowly moves into more ambient/experimental territory, revealing that there is quite a bit of variety, even in a genre as “minimal” as dub tech can be.
Good stuff to drift off to.
Don’t forget to check out the other Shapes and Phases comp featuring Relapxych, Quantec and Deer.
If anyone has issues with any of the recent files please let me know. Not sure the RS upload feature is working right.
Thanks.
Continuing with the dub tech stuff. I can’t seem to stop listening to it. Just when I think it’s all starting to get a bit repetitive, I’m drawn to it again…
Lulu Rouge’s Bless You album is one of the best albums of recent years, hands down.
This is a series of remixes of the title track to get you in the mood. If you don’t have it, track it down.

One of the more disturbing CDs in the Mo’ Wax catalogue. This one just radiates sell-out.
I post it here more in a historical sense, perhaps with a tinge of irony.
While the beats are good, the occasional voice-over from various athletes pushing Nike shoes (each track is named for a particular shoe) is absurd, not only because it taints the Mo’ Wax name but because, well, where are these shoes (and athletes) today?
Given away free through various outlets, no artist names are mentioned but the booklet states: “All music written and produced by MO WAX 1997″.
Apparently produced by Richard File, who took DJ Shadow’s place upon his departure from UNKLE.
For the completist.
